The 'Mind of God'
The first time I came across this phrase, I quite readily overlooked it's depth and importance in both philosophy and the sciences. It is not, as it would at first appear, to be a mere cliche, but rather it is the true heart of the question of all existence and the understanding of the world around us.
By searching for our scientific answers we are faced with the question not merely of 'How', but 'Why' do we exist as intelligent beings that can question our own existence. For this reason alone we are truly special, and it is this that separates us from all other life on our planet.
The more we ask 'Why' is the world the way it is? or 'Why' should things happen to be in a certain way? The more we tend to lead towards causality, (cause and effect). Yet our knowledge is limited beyond understanding any initial causality or cause for the existence of the whole universe and ourselves; we are also limited in our understanding of, what appears to us, the be the underlying fundamental and natural laws that govern all existence.
When we search for the underlying reason of 'why' the Universe, or even, life itself should exist at all, we are again at a loss. Our only reasonable explanation for this 'Why' question we face, is in the belief of the existence of God. Either as an all knowing, all powerful and unlimited being, or more scientifically as a combination of the fundamental laws that govern the creation of the Universe or Universes. these laws appear to us as immutable, and are almost God-like in themselves.
Our science has progressed at an unprecedented rate, to discover fundamental mathematical and physical laws that reappear again and again throughout nature and the Universe. Yet these revelations only leave us with more questions as to why these laws exist and what forces have governed their existence...
Was the Universe created by God?
If so, for what reason did God create it? as a necessity or through choice?
Does God play an active part in it's evolution, or was his part only in creating the universe?
If God is a perfect and omnipotent being, why did he introduce so many imperfections and variations into his creation?
Is this the only Universe that God has created?
Our understanding of the Universe and the world around us, indeed, our very being and chemistry has been influenced by our experiences from within it. We are a contingent part of the whole Universe, both the Universe and mankind are evolving together, could this really be God's motive or even purpose?
Do we exist as a matter of accident?
This is a truly theological question, but it would surely be a cruel joke on us if we finally strive to discover that we 'are' an accident of causality. If we discover that this is indeed the case, then by our intelligence alone, we would have proven that we are far more than just the sum of our parts, even beyond our own imaginations. We have already evolved to a stage where we freely question our own existence, and strive to find it's origins and reason. We have evolved to find cures for illnesses and disease, and even ways to manipulate cells and life itself. How far can we evolve in our understanding?
If we aspire to God, only to find out eventually, that God does not exist; how far would this have taken us? In other words, if there is no God to discover, then we must ourselves be the nearest thing, we would be our own God's, (a frightening and disturbing concept).
Can 'Man' evolve his consciousness to the point he becomes his own God?
... or will he discover instead, his Godly nature guided by his aspirations to God?
... which leads us to yet another question; where exactly does his ideas for this aspiration originate?
Looking for answers..
So can we really expect to learn all the answers from within our own minds?
We use our minds to perceive and understand the world and the Universe around us. It is the 'mind', that resolves questions, finds answers, and understands. It is the 'mind', that can leap beyond logic, and form ideas of what it cannot yet comprehend - and it is the miracle, that these ideas of the mind bear fruition.
The miraculous breakthroughs and inspirations that have lead to our scientific discoveries prove beyond doubt that our knowledge is based on hard facts and concepts, not merely explanations !
These perceptions have appeared, almost like revelations in some cases, through mankind's genius to explore beyond the physical world around us. With the use of 'Rationalism' and reason, the human mind can analyse and form concepts of the Universe and apply them to the 'real' world - or at least the world and Universe that we perceive?
Where do these ideas come from? ... are they divine in origin?
The discoveries in 'quantum' mechanics and physics have opened the gateway towards understanding chemistry, and has culminated in a fundamental understanding of our own biology and DNA. So much so, that we can now manipulate life itself, and discover it's secrets, and the search has only just begun.
Has all this too, been part of God's plan?
...is the motive for our existence to find God's truth, and seek his knowledge?
...to understand the 'Mind of God'?
