The Theological question

"The most important thing is to find out what is the most important thing".
[Shunryu Suzuki]

Three conversations - introduction

The following short piece comprises of three imaginary conversations contemplating the notion and the existence of God. The intention here, is to explore and investigate on a philosophical level, the ideas we may have regarding the existence of God, or indeed, any divine entity for that matter. The conversations will posit the generalised views held within the three major lines of thinking regarding the existence of God. These are namely; the theist, (who has positive faith and belief in the existence of God), the atheist, (who denies the existence of God, due to insufficient valid proofs), and finally, the agnostic, (who may take a more logical stance in not refuting the possibility of the existence of God, or moreover, be undecided in this matter.

The reasons behind the use of this format, using conversation and dialogue, can be explained in terms of simplicity and directness. What better way to express and reference ideas and views regarding these complex and often personal questions in a more direct and concise manner, than to use the form of simple dialogue with questions and answers?

It is hoped, that by utilising this format and style of directness, key points and arguments can be easily highlighted and explored, and used both as a point of reference for further investigation, and on a more personal note, a basis of self realisation and understanding. Since, it is only by asking questions that we can begin to find any answers, by aiming these questions squarely and directly at the self, we may hope to come to a conclusion regarding our own position regarding faith and belief. For this reason anyone may use these dialogues to discover and unlock the questions raised in their own hearts and minds, as the key questions raised here should be applicable in general terms to all faiths, and also aid to encourage personal insight.

Whilst the following dialogues are purely imaginary in nature, and are not merely reconstructed from direct conversations, they do constitute and comprise of real thoughts and ideas gathered during real conversations regarding the nature of this matter. The ideas expressed here are also of a highly personal nature, and include my own thoughts regarding the existence of God, and views in communicating and discussing this subject. Therefore, these dialogues must also serve the purpose to include a personal perspective of the matter, and may thus exhibit views not wholly accepted as being general in nature, although once again, the aim here is to be non-subjective. These conversations will also serve as a journal and evolution of my own thoughts and ideas.

These dialogues are by no means set as stone, and may be edited and appended to from time to time as deemed necessary, with a fluid approach taken for their construction. I believe that these dialogues may prove to provide some personal spiritual evolution and growth, and may even serve as a guide for future personal reference. I feel the potential for change in content here is fundamental in the exploration of both oneself, and this important subject matter.
